About EINs: An Employer Identification Number (EIN), also known as a Federal Tax Identification Number, is a nine digit number that the IRS assigns to business entities. The IRS uses this number to identify taxpayers that are required to file various tax returns. EINs are used by employers, sole proprietors, corporations, partnerships, non-profit organizations, trusts and estates, government agencies, certain individuals and other business entities.

You are required to obtain an EIN if you do one or more of the following:

1) Form a C or S corporation, a LLC, a Partnership, a Trust or Estate or other business entities ( the EIN is like your social security number).

2) Pay wages to one or more employees.

3) File pension or excise returns.

A sole proprietorship needs an EIN if it has employees, a pension plan, pays excise taxes or files bankruptcy.

IMPORTANT: You should apply for your EIN before you open for business. Most banks will require an EIN to open corporate or partnership bank accounts.  Many states will also require the EIN for sales tax numbers, unemployment tax numbers, withholding and corporate documentation.
